Network signals are poor in your area, or another company has a much better package — but you do not want to lose the number your whole life runs on. Mobile Number Portability (MNP) exists exactly for this: you keep the same number and simply move it to another network. Here is the complete process in Pakistan.

1. Check the conditions before you apply

Your SIM must be registered in your own name on your CNIC, and biometric verification must be complete. The number should have been active on your current network for at least 60 days, and there should be no outstanding dues on a postpaid connection. Clear any borrowed balance/advance too — a pending advance can delay the port. Note: your remaining balance and packages do not transfer to the new network, so use them up first.

2. Send the porting SMS

From the SIM you want to move, send an SMS with the text MNP to 667. You will receive a reply asking for your details — reply with your name and CNIC number exactly as registered. You will then receive a confirmation message with your porting details and a PIN/confirmation code. Keep this message safe; you will need it at the shop.

3. Visit the new network's franchise or service centre

Take your original CNIC, your current SIM, and the confirmation SMS to any franchise or customer service centre of the network you are moving TO. They will do biometric verification, note your request, and give you a new SIM of the new network with your old number. A small SIM/porting fee may apply (usually modest; ask before paying anything more).

4. Wait for activation — and keep using the old SIM

Porting usually completes within 1 to 4 working days. Keep your old SIM in the phone and keep using it normally — when it loses signals permanently, that is the sign the port completed. Switch off the phone, insert the new SIM, and restart. Your number is now on the new network.

5. Set up the new network properly

After switching: check balance with the new network's code, install its official app, and subscribe to fresh packages — nothing carried over. Internet usually starts automatically; if not, restart once more or request settings from the new network's helpline. Also tell your bank and Easypaisa/JazzCash — the number stays the same, so accounts keep working, but OTP delivery can hiccup for a day.

Changed your mind? You generally cannot port again for about 60 days after a successful port, so choose the destination network after checking its signals at your home and workplace — ask neighbours on that network, not just the shop.

6. If the port is rejected

Common rejection reasons: CNIC/name mismatch (the SIM is registered to a family member — they must apply or transfer ownership first), the 60-day condition not met, or unpaid postpaid dues. The rejection SMS normally states the reason; fix that one thing and reapply rather than paying any agent extra.

Frequently asked questions

Will my WhatsApp and bank accounts work after porting?

Yes. Your number does not change, so WhatsApp, Easypaisa, JazzCash and bank accounts linked to the number keep working. OTPs may be unreliable for the first several hours only.

Does my balance transfer to the new network?

No. Balance, free MBs and active packages stay behind and are lost. Use them up before the switch completes.

How much does MNP cost?

The process itself is low-cost — typically just a new SIM fee at the franchise. Anyone demanding a large "porting fee" is overcharging you; use an official service centre instead.
