Job, university and government portals in Pakistan often reject PDFs over a small limit. Size comes from scanned pages saved as full-colour photos. Shrinking the scan properly beats random online compressors — and keeps your documents private.

1. Rescan smaller — the best fix for scanned documents

If you still have the paper document, rescan it in Google Drive → Scan choosing black & white for text documents and a lower scan quality in the scan settings. A black-and-white text scan is often one-tenth the size of a colour photo scan, and portals accept it happily for certificates and forms.

2. Reduce photos before making the PDF

If your PDF was made from gallery photos: open each photo, use the gallery editor or Google Photos to lower nothing yet — instead remake the PDF via Share → Print → Save as PDF and in the print options choose fewer pages per sheet only if asked; the print path usually compresses far better than camera-app PDF exports. Check the resulting file size in Files.

3. Compress an existing PDF with a trusted app

For a file you cannot rescan, use the official Adobe Acrobat app (Compress PDF) or your phone maker built-in file tools where offered. Open the result and zoom into the text: if the CNIC number is unreadable, the compression is too strong — redo it at a medium setting.

Privacy first: Do not upload CNIC, passport, certificates or bank documents to unknown free PDF compressor websites. You are handing identity copies to strangers. Every method above works on your own phone.

4. Split if the portal allows page-wise upload

Some portals accept front and back as separate files. Scanning CNIC front and back as two small PDFs, each under the limit, is acceptable where the form provides separate upload boxes — and wrong where it asks for one combined file. Read the form labels before splitting.

5. Check before you submit

Open Files, confirm the final size is under the stated limit with a little margin, open the PDF once, and verify page order and readability. Renaming clearly (Name-CNIC.pdf) avoids mix-ups in multi-document applications.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my scanned PDF so large?

Because each page was saved as a full-resolution colour photo. Black-and-white document scanning and document-quality settings reduce size dramatically with no loss that matters for forms.

The portal limit is 200 KB and my file is still bigger. What now?

Rescan in black and white at the lowest readable quality, one document per file if the form allows, and re-check readability by zooming in after compression.

Will compressing a PDF make it blurry?

Heavy compression can. Always open the compressed file and zoom into the smallest text — if you can read it easily, a checker can too.
