Losing a phone is stressful — your photos, WhatsApp, banking apps, and SIM are all inside it. The good news is that in Pakistan you can block a stolen or lost phone through PTA so it stops working on every mobile network in the country. A blocked phone becomes almost useless to a thief. This guide shows how to find your IMEI, block the phone through PTA's official channels, and what to do if you get the phone back.

First, understand what blocking does

Every phone has a unique identity number called the IMEI. When PTA blocks an IMEI through its DIRBS system, no Pakistani SIM — Jazz, Zong, Telenor, or Ufone — will work in that phone again. The phone cannot make calls, use mobile data, or receive messages on any local network. Blocking does not delete your data or find the phone's location, so also change your important passwords (Google, Facebook, WhatsApp banking apps) from another device as soon as possible.

1. Find your phone's IMEI number

You need the IMEI to file the blocking request. Try these options:

  • If you still had the phone recently, the IMEI is printed on the phone's box and usually on the purchase receipt or warranty card
  • On any phone you can dial *#06# to see its IMEI — do this today for your current phone and save a screenshot somewhere safe
  • Android users can check Google Find My Device (android.com/find) after signing in — it shows your device details and can also lock or erase the phone
  • iPhone users can see device details after signing in to iCloud.com/find

Dual-SIM phones have two IMEI numbers. Note down both, because both should be blocked.

2. Block the phone by SMS to 8484

From any working mobile number, you can start the blocking process by sending an SMS to 8484, PTA's official short code. Follow the instructions in the reply messages carefully and provide the IMEI and the details asked for. Keep the confirmation message you receive — it is proof of your request and may be needed later for unblocking.

3. Block through the PTA CMS website or app

PTA's Complaint Management System (CMS) is available on the PTA website (pta.gov.pk) and as a mobile app. Create an account or sign in, choose the option for blocking a stolen or lost mobile phone, and enter the required information: your name, CNIC number, contact number, the phone's IMEI number(s), the brand and model, and when and where it was lost. Submit the complaint and save the complaint or tracking number shown at the end.

4. Report to the police as well

PTA blocking stops the phone from being used, but you should also report the theft at your local police station and keep a copy of the report or FIR. This protects you if the phone or your SIM is later misused for anything illegal, and the report can support your case if the phone is recovered. Also call your network's helpline and get your SIM blocked immediately — a stolen SIM can be used to receive your bank and WhatsApp codes.

5. What happens after you apply

PTA verifies the details before blocking, so it is not always instant — it can take some time, often up to a day or more. You may receive updates by SMS. Once blocked, the IMEI is added to the blocked list in DIRBS, and the phone stops getting signals from all Pakistani networks. Anyone checking that IMEI through PTA's verification channels will see it as blocked.

6. If you find the phone again — unblocking

If your phone is recovered, you do not have to throw it away. Contact PTA through the same CMS or helpline channels and request unblocking. You will need to prove the phone is yours — expect to provide your CNIC, the original complaint number, and possibly the purchase proof or police report closure. After verification, PTA removes the IMEI from the blocked list and the phone starts working on Pakistani networks again.

Warnings to remember

  • Only use PTA's official website, app, helpline, or the 8484 code — never pay a random shop or website that promises "fast blocking"
  • Block your SIM and change your Google, Facebook, and banking passwords first — IMEI blocking alone does not protect your accounts
  • Enter the IMEI digits very carefully; one wrong digit means the wrong phone gets blocked, or yours stays active

Frequently asked questions

How long does PTA take to block a stolen phone?

It is not always instant, because PTA verifies your details first. It often takes up to a day or more, and you may get updates by SMS on the number you provided.

Can a blocked phone be used on Wi-Fi?

Yes, blocking stops mobile networks only — SIM calls, SMS, and mobile data stop working in Pakistan. That is why you must also lock the phone and change your account passwords.

Can I unblock the phone if I find it later?

Yes. Contact PTA through the CMS or helpline with your CNIC, the original complaint number, and proof of ownership, and PTA can remove your IMEI from the blocked list after verification.
