WhatsApp Web problems look like a laptop fault, but half of them are actually phone or browser settings. Work through these fixes in order and test after each one.

1. Check the phone first

WhatsApp Web mirrors your phone account. Your phone needs internet, WhatsApp updated, and battery saver should not be killing WhatsApp in the background. Open WhatsApp on the phone once and leave it unlocked while you link.

2. Link correctly — and clean the camera

On the computer open only the official web.whatsapp.com. On the phone: WhatsApp → Settings / three dots → Linked devices → Link a device, then scan. Wipe the phone camera lens, increase screen brightness on the laptop, and hold the phone steady — a dim screen is the top cause of failed scans.

3. Fix the browser

  • Update Chrome or Edge to the latest version and restart it.
  • Clear cache for web.whatsapp.com, or test in a private/incognito window to rule out a broken extension.
  • Disable VPN and ad-blocker extensions for this site, then reload.

4. It keeps logging out

Usually the phone is removing the session: aggressive battery savers on Xiaomi, Infinix, Oppo and Vivo phones close WhatsApp in the background. Set WhatsApp battery use to Unrestricted / No restrictions and lock it in Recent apps. On the laptop, tick Keep me signed in on the QR screen before scanning.

Messages not loading fully? Large media loads slowly on weak Wi-Fi. Connect both phone and laptop to the same strong Wi-Fi, wait two minutes after linking, and avoid switching networks during the first sync.

5. Remove old linked devices

In Linked devices, log out sessions you do not recognise or no longer use, then link again fresh. This also is a security habit: an unknown session there means someone else can read your chats.

Only use the official site: Never enter a WhatsApp code or scan a QR code on a look-alike site sent in a message or ad. Real linking happens only inside your own WhatsApp app pointing at web.whatsapp.com or the official desktop app.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the QR code keep refreshing without scanning?

The code expires every short while by design. If scans keep failing, clean the camera, brighten the laptop screen, update WhatsApp, and make sure you are scanning from Linked devices — not the normal camera app.

Can I use WhatsApp Web when my phone is off?

Yes for a while — linked devices work independently once connected, which is why reviewing linked devices regularly matters for your privacy.

WhatsApp Web opens but chats are blank. What now?

Log out from Linked devices on the phone, clear the browser cache for the site, and link again on stable Wi-Fi. Give the first sync a few minutes before judging.
