WhatsApp calls fail for three usual reasons: the app does not have permission to use the camera or microphone, the internet connection is too weak or unstable for video, or the app itself needs an update or cache clean. Work through these steps in order — test a call after each one.
1. Check your internet speed honestly
Video calling needs a stable connection, not just a connected one. If you are on mobile data with one or two signal bars, or on a busy shared Wi-Fi, switch networks and try again. Move closer to the router, or switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data (or the reverse). If voice calls work but video freezes, bandwidth is almost certainly the problem.
2. Give WhatsApp camera and microphone permission
On Android: Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Permissions — set Camera and Microphone to Allow. On iPhone: Settings → WhatsApp — turn on Microphone and Camera. If these are off, you get exactly the classic symptoms: black screen, or the other side cannot hear you.
3. Close apps fighting for the camera
Only one app can use the camera at a time. If Instagram, TikTok, a video recorder or a scanning app was just open, the camera may still be held. Close all recent apps, reopen WhatsApp, and call again. A quick phone restart clears this completely.
4. Update WhatsApp — and the phone
Open the Play Store or App Store and update WhatsApp. Call features change often, and a very old version can fail against a newer one on the other side. Also install any pending phone software update, which carries camera and audio fixes.
5. Turn off data saver and battery restrictions
Android data saver and aggressive battery savers throttle WhatsApp in the background. Go to Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Mobile data and allow background data; then in Battery settings for WhatsApp choose Unrestricted. On Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo phones this step alone fixes calls that drop or never ring.
6. Check you are not blocked — and the call is not a group limit issue
If calls to ONE person fail but others work, you may have been blocked by that contact, or their app is broken — test by asking a third person to call them. Group video calls also need everyone on a reasonably recent WhatsApp version.
7. Clear cache (Android) or offload (iPhone)
Android: Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Storage → Clear cache — this does not delete chats. iPhone has no cache button; if problems persist, the safe route is: confirm your chat backup in WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup, then reinstall WhatsApp and restore.
8. Test with earphones to find the faulty part
If people say your voice echoes or sounds far away, make one call with wired or Bluetooth earphones. If the sound becomes perfect, your phone's microphone or speaker grill needs cleaning or repair — no setting will fix a physically blocked mic hole.
Frequently asked questions
Why can the other person see me but not hear me?
Almost always the microphone permission is off, or another app is holding the mic. Allow Microphone permission for WhatsApp and close other calling/recording apps, then test again.
Why do my WhatsApp video calls freeze again and again?
Unstable internet is the top cause — weak mobile signal or crowded Wi-Fi. Switch networks, move closer to the router, and close downloads or streams running on the same connection.
Will clearing WhatsApp cache delete my chats?
No. Clear cache removes only temporary files. Your chats, photos and voice notes stay. Avoid "Clear storage/data" unless you have a fresh chat backup.
